Consists of a ribbon from the Democratic Whig National Convention (1844); a handwritten letter (1 p.), dated Nov. 24, 1850, to W.R. Turner of Marysville, Calif., discussing the death of Clay's grandson, his nephew's success as a lawyer in Calif., and Turner's handling of a local "disturbance"; and a typed transcript of a letter to Thomas E. Stevenson of Frankfort, Ky. (1 p.), dated Apr. 3, 1850, discussing passage of the Compromise of 1850, the recent death of John C. Calhoun, and the weakness of the current U.S. administration. Includes typed transcript of handwritten letter.

Henry Clay Sr. (April 12, 1777 – June 29, 1852) was an American attorney and statesman who represented Kentucky in both the Senate and House. He was the seventh House speaker and the ninth secretary of state. He received electoral votes for president in the 1824, 1832, and 1844 presidential elections. He also helped found both the National Republican Party and the Whig Party.
